The entire town, including the market area, was looted. All the food supplies were burned. In the end more than 10,000 people ran from Akot, Sudan, and the surrounding areas to seek shelter in 13 nearby villages.

Kate Ncube hand makes and sells dolls of 17 southern Africa tribes, or people groups. “I enjoy learning about other cultures,” Kate said. “It gives me a lot of insight and helps me understand a person. To understand them, I must understand their culture!”

In a cattle trough near the village water pump, 74 believers are baptized as a symbol of their new lives in Christ.

Before being baptized, each person professes his or her personal faith in Jesus Christ.

Believers gathered around the watering trough clap and sing in celebration of each baptism.

Though the baptism service was long and the sun was hot, the atmosphere was one of praise and celebration.

“I felt so glad today when I was baptized,” said grandmother Sikholiwe Ngwenya. “I’m so glad that there’s light in my life and there’s even light in my family, and that Jesus Christ is part of our family.”

After the baptism service, the church members gathered for a worship service under the trees outside the village school.

“I was very happy,” church lay leader Lyton Moyo said about the baptism service. “… I’m asking you to pray for me to be a good leader; to be exemplary every day. And pray for our church to grow.”
